While I agree we should honor our history and that of the U.S. Presidents, the school board has the obligation to do what is best for the students of the school system. In this event, they must make up the lost instructional time and unfortunately they had very little leeway with what dates could actually be used.
The MLK holiday could have been an option and I would have had no problem going on that day because students could have used the time to learn about Dr. King and the civil rights movement instead of sitting at home. However, that holiday was immediately following the snow canceled days and gave the school board very little time to plan for that day to be utilized as an option. Plus the weather was definitely still a hazard going into the weekend so the school board had no reasonable time to plan on school being open on that day.
While I can understand your opinion on this matter and agree that Washington and Lincoln deserve as much, and in some cases more, observance as MLK receives; the fact is the school board is elected to do a job and that is to see that all students have a top rate education system. Their job is not to please every person in the county on which days are and are not off limits when it comes to snow makeup days.
How could they have voted to cancel the MLK holiday when it had already passed at the time of the vote?
You sound like fool on this one. It has nothing to do with political alignment. Days need to be made up, end of story.
The Presidents were great men and great leaders. They changed and shaped this great country. Martin Luther King was a great speaker and lead a movement that also changed this country.
Even so, I personally don't see the need for a day off for either one. I think that students would benefit more by going to school and using those particular days to focus on those people and their accomplishments. The current system just gives kids a day off, nothing more.
Why do you want days off in the middle of lousy winter anyway? We get so many days off as it is. I think it would be much better to scrap all these single days off and give people more vacation time. 10 days a real just doesn't cut it. I'd rather work on MLK, Presidents' Day, Good Friday, etc... and get 10 more vacation days a year so that I can choose when I take time off. It is sure wouldn't be in January or February.
